What exactly IS fascia?

And what does it have to do with me?

Fascia is the tissue that gives our bodies its form. It is everywhere, and it can get “sticky” and restricted through trauma, surgery, and stress.  Fascia can withstand and exert up to 2000 pounds/square inch on surrounding structures. (Think ten newborn elephants sitting on your chest!)

This pressure can impede blood flow, lymphatic flow, oxygenation to our muscles and organs which can lead to a build-up of toxins, decreased mobility, pain, impaired functioning and a poor quality of life.

How do I address these issues?

Through Myofascial Release Therapy, the therapist sinks her hands into the depth barrier of the tissue feeling for this stickiness and restriction. Once found, the therapist applies a firm but gentle pressure until the tissue softens, like butter melting or taffy stretching.

As the tissue softens, the therapist gently moves into the next restriction staying there until it releases. This sustained hold not only takes the pressure off the system allowing for improved blood flow, lymph flow, and range of motion, but it also allows the nervous system to quiet down, relax, and further setting the fascia free.

OUR TECHNIQUES

No matter what complex health issue you’re living with, we are here to support you on your journey to wellness. Each session is unique to YOU.

John F. Barnes Myofascial Release

  • Firm but gentle pressure is applied directly to dry skin allowing time to sink into the depth barrier until a restriction is found.

The therapist maintains the sustained pressure until the tissue softens which can feel like butter melting or taffy stretching.

Dry Needling

  • A thin monofilament needle is inserted into the skin to stimulate muscles, fascia, and connective tissue to assist in management of pain, scarring, neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction, and movement dysfunction.  Electrical stimulation may be added to the DN treatment if it is deemed appropriate as it can enhance the effects of DN.

Myofascial Manipulation

  • Moderate to strong pressure is applied by the therapist’s fingers, thumbs, palms, and/or elbows to “break through the concrete,” to directly address tissue tightness, ”knots,” adhesions and restrictions.

Visceral Manipulation

  • Manual approach that addresses the thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic organs (viscera) to improve their movement,  function, and relationships within the body.

Craniosacral Therapy

  • Subtle, light pressure is applied to the body to address restrictions in the tissues and fluids that surround the brain, brain stem, and spinal cord.  This allows for improved flow of the cerebrospinal fluid and can lead to improved health and well-being.
